Hola, bestie!
My name is Sophie Swallow and I can promise you that speaking Spanish will change your life. (I know, because it changed mine!)
I grew up in the US South and never saw the purpose of focusing in Spanish class. What did it have to do with me? Flash forward to 2018 when I begin to work at an elementary school in Guatemala City and I realize that “hola” and “gracias” aren’t nearly enough.
I spent the next few years dividing my time between Guatemala and college in Vermont, working up my Spanish skills. While I did major in Spanish and Education, I credit the brutally honest Guatemalan kids with teaching me Spanish. Believe me–I felt just as frustrated and confused as you might be feeling right now. Learning a new language is not easy.
